Happy International Women's Day 2024

During our team catch-up, our Videographer, Hannah, raised that International Women’s Day was just around the corner and that she’d like to create a piece of content around this.

The girls in our team, me (Daisy, Studio Manager), Hannah (Videographer and Editor), and Kate (Lead Editor), decided to get together and over a brew sharing some of our experiences of being a females in the workplace. Our clearest takeaway was that our industry is undoubtedly male-dominated with many roles in both production and post filled by men.

We’re really proud to have a female Lead Editor and a female Videographer at Dead Pixel, however, we realise that this isn’t the same across the industry. It’s estimated that only 24% of videographers and 27% of editors are female. A lot of young girls never see examples of women working in roles like ours, particularly in technical roles like camerawork and editing, so we wanted to use our platform to show what we do and provide that kind of representation.

The video was centred around the idea of visibility and connection - to show ourselves as women working in a heavily male-dominated industry. We wanted to offer advice, skill sharing and networking to other women in our industry. Our overall aim was to create a community of women who can empower one another to aim high in our careers so that one day young girls will see more women working in video production! Our call to action looked a little like this…

… And what a great response we had! From fellow women working both in the UK and overseas, those at the start of their careers, and those with many years under their belts, all from a variety of roles - it was clear that we all were on the lookout for a network of women working in video production.

We also got featured in Prolific North

The new connections allowed for the team to offer advice to career starters with Hannah and Kate both offering up technical advice on editing and videography, as well as suggesting routes into the industry. We also heard from women with a wealth of experience in the industry offering their help to future generations. As someone new to video production, I’m so pleased to be broadening my connections with other women in the industry; I've since discovered the work of many talented women. And I am SO inspired!

We aim to continue to build on this network. Hannah, Kate and I have joined an online community, Making Moves and Movies, which is a reliable source for finding work & making positive connections for female & non binary people in the film industry. We plan to spread the word of this fab resource as well as offering up our time to skill share, provide and seek advice with our new and future network. We’d love to host a get-together with our new network one day!

So if you’re a woman working in film production wanting to get involved in the conversation, just send any questions, and/or which area of production you're interested in to girltalk@deadpixelfilms.com and you'll hear back from one of us soon.
